Kitchen cabinet / backsplash design question - your opinion please? Take a look at the following picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77094332@N00/2052510579/ Notice on the left side on the bar, the cabinets stop on top but the backsplash keeps running the length of the counter. I don't believe this is how it is supposed to be. What is your opinion? 1) It is correct as is, backsplash should run entire length of granite 2) It needs to be changed, there should be another cabinet on the end 3) It needs to be changed, the backsplash should stop when the cabinets stop.. Let me know, thanks. This is not something I designed. It is a new house that was under construction when I bought it... one of these cookie cutter houses. This is a new floor plan though and I think they are working out the kinks.
Best rated paint for kitchen cabinet redo? I want to use the best rated and performance paint to redo/repaint my kitchen cabinets. I am leaning towards an oil based as I redid my bathroom with a water based paint designed for cabinets and I didn't like the results. Yes, I prepped the surface but it still chipped. Anyone have any good recommendations having actually used a product? Thanks in advance!
anyone know of a good virtual kitchen design program that will allow painted cabinets? i'm redesigning my kitchen, and want to use a virtual designer to view samples prior to purchase and install. i purchased a program called plan 3-d, however, it dones't allow painted cabinets -- only stained. my cabinets are painted, and it's imperitive to my granite choice. any help appreciated.

I have bad experience with their desks, cheap wooden furniture but don't know about theyr kitchens. Thanks

Has anyone purchased their kitchen cabinets, etc from Home Depot? We recently had our kitchen designed at Home Depot--cabinets, countertops, etc. Now I'm hearing their merchandise is of a lower quality. My question is this--if I'm actually getting my cabinets, etc from another manufacturer (say, Kraftmaid) but buying them through HD, how can their merchandise be lower quality? Besides, I'm sure the manfacturer is the one that backs their products, not Home Depot. Has anyone heard of this? What has your experience been with HD as far as kitchen materials? P.S.--HD will NOT be installing them.
Ordering Kitchen Cabinets? Want to order cabinets at a Kitchen Design place. Do I need to measure my kitchen exactly or can they give me rough estimate based on layout 10x13, and will they do an accurate measure onsite... or do i need my own installer to do this?
Kitchen design-help? I am remodeling my kitchen. What happens is that the kitchen and dining room are an only lineal piece and I don't have any the original floor tiles. I need to change the kitchen tile but I would like an idea on how to make it look good, like separate from the other room. I was thinking in borders or diamond. I'm not sure on what to do or the colors. The other tiles are terracota and the kitchen cabinets are mahogany. If I could see a picture maybe on the web of one idea!!
Any opinions on NY Kitchen Design in Brooklyn, NY? We're looking to update our kitchen. Mainly making the entry way wider, re-doing the counters and cabinets...anyone know a good architect/contracter?
Kitchen paint color scheme - interior decorating/design question HELP!? Help! My kitchen needs a makeover! Here's what has to stay - the floor has a marbled look to it - it is mostly white but has blueish gray in it, the cabinets are a beautiful dark wood to match the rest of the trim in our home, and the countertop is pale blue. The kitchen is quite small, and sort of dark because of all of the dark wood cabinets, but I am not willing to paint the cabinets. I consider myself to be good at interior design, but I am just stumped because of the high contrast between the pale blue countertop and the dark cabinets. I love the floor, but hate the countertop. I know you can buy paint to paint the counter, but I am too scared to do that. I would consider having someone put new laminate on the countertop, but I have no idea how much this would cost or who (a store?) you would go to to ask about this. Another problem I have is that there is a LOT of trim in our kitchen. This means I have to decide on two colors instead of one. Currently the kitchen is the same as it was when we moved in last year - I've done the rest of the house but am stumped on the kitchen. Right now the walls are sort of a pale greenish blue and the trim is sort of a light evergreen, and there is flowerish border around to tie all the blues/greens/beiges together. It certainly doesn't look bad, but its just kind of "blah" and doesn't do anything for me. It doesn't reflect my style or the fact that I'm 24 and really into interior design. I'm also scared to pair the blue with yellow because of it looking too country-ish. Please help! One more thing - my living room is off the kitchen, but through a doorway, and it is done in monochromatic shades of the aquaish color that's so hot right now - if anyone is familiar with Pier 1, its the color that they have a lot of pieces and curtains in. If I stick with blue or green in the kitchen, won't this clash with the aqua in the livingroom? Many are suggesting painting an accent wall another color - my kitchen is sort of circular with cabinets all around - there is no ceiling to floor wall in the whole kitchen without cabinets or the bar against it.
I need help in kitchen/dining design please? I chose a dark cherry cabinets for the kitchen we are remodeling right now. It is a U-shaped kitchen. My husband keeps telling me that the color I picked will darken a small kitchen and makes it smaller. Do you have a suggestion on what type of granite countertop to pick? The color of the floor tile is white with a hint of tan-ish or light brown color on it. I want the kitchen to look contemporary, bright, and also what type of dining set I should pick. Post some photos as well please. Thank you.
Installing Our Own Kitchen Cabinets (?) Please? We're thinking about buying the oak stained cabinets from Lowe's. I've just one question though, that is, I'd like to have a cabinet with 2 large pull out pot and pan drawers. This is a cabinet that would probably be custom made from Lowe's but we can't afford to have one built. We need to use stock cabinets. Is there a way and hardware that we could use on one of the base cabinets from Lowe's and design this feature ourselves? Thanks and I hope somebody has already did this for their kitchen.
Is there a design rule on using knobs vs. pulls on cabinets? Doing a full kitchen remodel with all new cabinets. Having a difficult time choosing the hardware. When should you use the round knobs and when should you use the longer handle type drawer pulls on kitchen cabinets? Should they always be combined together in the kitchen?
Is acrylic paint cn be used to make any designs on any cabinet? Is acrylic paint cn be used 2 make any designs on any cabinet like kitchen cabinet, wardrobe n cupboard? If cn, what type of cabinets cn produce paint work look nicer?
Do you know of a reputable place to buy kitchen cabinets online? After working with a designer at Lowes to design a kitchen, I'm wondering if there are other options out there where if I know the exact layout of the kitchen I want, I can just buy the cabinets online. Are there places that have good quality cabinets at reasonable prices?
help me finish my kitchen design please? Hello my boyfriend and I bought a house and are in the process of renovating it. it is a beautiful old victorian home and we are currently working on the kitchen and didn't really expect it to cost so much for cabinets . So we currently have a large L shape with upper and lower cabinets but then there is a bare wall that is 6 ft long that has nothing on it. What do you think we could put there until we can afford the cabinets. We won't put a kitchen table there because we already have a dining room but any suggestions would be great! what would you do with a bare 6 or 7 ft wall in your kitchen? THANKS
I need some designing tips on a new kitchen.? We are currently renovating our home with the major renovation being the kitchen. We chose maple cabinets with a coffee glaze and would like wood floors. I have not picked out countertops, I am very confused. Is there any rule as to what color counter tops and floors should be? Should I go light on the floors and counters, a dark color, a mixture? All the kitchens I see in the magazines look so well blended. I don't want to spend all this money and do a designer mess up. Any input will help ease my confusion.
Can you recommend a FREE kitchen design program? One that lets me choose cabinets, counters, flooring, and wall color.
Can you offer advice for building our kitchen cabinets sustainably? We live in northeast Pennsylvania and are finding green building supplies hard to come by. We need to get our kitchen designed and have not found any local resources for green kitchen cabinetry. Can someone give us some recommendations?
Do I have to center the kitchen sink under the kitchen window? I don't have room for much cabinet space and I've chosen a design that takes the kitchen sink about six inches off center. Do I chose the centered sink or the cabinet space?

Would it be ok to paint my wooden trims in kitchen white even though I have maple wood cabinets?Does it go? I have a kitchen with maple wood cabinets, stainless steel appl., black countertop. Currently has wood trims all over but would like to paint it white but do not know if it would look good. I will eventually paint the wall too like maybe a neutral color. I have no design sense so you can throw in suggestions for a good wall color too. Kitchen is a galley style about approx 9x16.
Should I paint or refinish my kitchen cabinets? My kitchen is very small and "L" shaped. Right now I have the walls painted a sage green color, which I want to keep. My cabinets are plain with no wood designs or anything, and they're stained a very dark, walnut type of color. My floor is vinyl floor tiles in a light beige white marble kind of pattern. My appliances are bisque color. I'm wondering if I should paint my cabinets a cream color, or antique white color or if I should refinish and stain them a lighter wood color - like light oak. I'd rather restain, but I'm also wondering how long it would take to sand down to the natural wood color. Any help would be appreciated because I can't make up my mind.
kitchen cabinets? does anyone now of a site that you can design a kichen layout with 3D graphics ?
how far away do kitchen cabinets have to be from an oven? I Had a cabinet maker custom design my cabinets and they are only a few inches from my gas burner. I accidentely had a pan touching the side of the cabinet and it burned the cherry cabinets. When I told someone, they said its illegal to build cabinets within 12" of your range in Minnesota. Is this true???
Do drawers or cabinets cost more when building a home? We're designing the kitchen of our new home. We'd like to use only drawers on one wall of the kitchen rather than cabinets. Will that cost more? In the current design there are only cabinets on that wall.
i got a new home and i want to make my kitchen cabinet all in glass or fibreglass.? Does anyone knows any website on fibreglass or glass design for kitchen and how i can asseble it?
I need some design advice on my blinds? I am in the process of building my house. I am getting prices and ideas for my blinds and I am wondering what color blinds I should do. My home is a country wrap around porch, hickory kitchen cabinets and rustic trim. My doors are going to be white hollow core with a bead board look in them (Jeldwen, Sata Fe style), except the office door, it's in the entry way and kind of a focal point so it's going to be a double hung solid wood knotty alder door with windows in it. I am doing a rough sawn look for my base and case and I think I want to do white blinds. I am having trouble visualizing this. Will it look okay? I am going to have a lot of wood and neutral colors in my house so I kind of want to stay away from wood colored blinds. Any advice out there or any websites I can go to and see some photos of other windows and homes?? Also, I am looking cost effective. I don't want super expensive, but I want a good quality blind. I am fine with faux woods, but I don't want cheap crap either. The exterior of my house is a tan, almost gray siding with a ledgestone wainscot in various shade of tan and dark browns and grays, white trim, dark charcoal shutters and dark stained rough sawn timber porch posts
Interactive kitchen design website? Does anyone know of an interactive kitchen design website where I can try out different types of cabinets, countertops, and maybe wall colors?

Where can my daughter go online to design her own pertend kitchen for free? Like just to play and design choose her own appliances and cabinets and countertops.
do you know of a good online design (kitchen) website? I want to layout cabinets, and appliances in a remodel. Thanks.
Can you recommend ventilation systems for island kitchen? I am designing an island kitchen and would like for the cook top to be on the island. I had planned to use a downdraft ventilation system, but the contractor said it's not feasible in my house. The kitchen cabinet designer at Lowes said there is a new, high tech charcoal ventilation system that uses filters and recirculates the air. She said it is unlike the older systems that are not effective; that it is new and high tech. Does anyone know anything about these? If not, can you recommend a system that will work well? Is it possible to tap into the existing vent, even though it's 7 ft away? Or, am I stuck with the existing location of my cook top? Also, a classic chimney hood will not work with the style. Is there anything that is powerful but mounts flush with the ceiling?
Can anyone help with kitchen theme design? I have a lot of Coca-Cola kitchen ware and have always wanted to have a 1950's style kitchen. I am moving into a house where I can make this work. The cabinets are a dark wood that I am considering painting, things are edged in chrome, and the back wall of the kitchen is a shiny material that is about the color of lime sherbet. This wall is visible from the living room and I'm not sure that painting this wall is even an option since it is slick and shiny. I'd like to keep the color, but how can I tie it in with red, black and white dishes?
interactive website for kitchen design? i'm looking for a website where i can see colors of cabinets, floors, and countertops together....hubbby and i will be moving into grandmas house where we will gut the kitchen, but we will keep the floor because it's pretty cool. of course it's a orangy-redish stone design, so color matching will be difficult. is there a site where they give you a blank canvas and allow you to add colors and styles? kind of interactive website? thanks
Kitchen design - colour scheme? Trying my best to design a new kitchen for our family home, so far: We have white appliances and have chosen white cabinets with beech doors, walls are tiled white from floor to above worktop, we would like either pale green, light sand or light beige for the top half of the walls. Question is, what colour floor and worktops do you think would look best? Thanks
Kitchen cabinet matching colors? I have a house that was built in the 60's, so the cabinet faces are very plain. Well I just added a single set, base cabinet next to my stove, but while it's still very simple and plain, it doesn't match the rest of the cabinets in the kitchen (style-wise). I painted the other cabinets and gave them a "wood look" with knots designed in them and everything a while back. Should I do the same with this new cabinet, or should I just call a spade a spade, and paint/stain it something very different? My appliances are black and the old cabinets with the wood look are light brown. The new cabinet is just unfinished at this point. It is on the opposite wall, but there are still similar cabinets above the stove and directly above this new cabinet. I would agree totally with you if this cabinet was by itself.
Design kitchen color scheme around white stove and fridge? A white fridge and stove are coming today. We are just re-coloring the kitchen (walls, cabinets, flooring) temporarily and inexpensively until we re-vamp to re-sell years later. I'd love to do a modern mocha muave slate color scheme, but I think the white will be too stark a contrast. The countertop stays for now- a marbly laminate that ranges from a beige to mocha, with mauve undertones. How do I tie in that mix with white? To what extent can we use modern neutrals? Thank you!
Are there any disadvantages to refacing kitchen cabinets? I know it doesn't improve the design of the cabinets but I am wondering about the material that is being used
Redoing kitchen. How can I estimate the cost for kitchen cabinets? Based on the design it looks like there are 79 linear feet and @ 24 "boxes". Want wood fronts, probably cherry, woods drawers, plywood construction to support granite counter tops.
Painting wood kitchen cabinets - good idea, or bad? Thinking of resale value, would it matter much if I were to paint my wood kitchen cabinets? The cabinets in question are 13 years old, a tad plain, and on the cheap side, but they're really not bad. I just have a design idea that includes painting them, however, as this is my starter home and I don't plan on living here for likely more than a few years, I want to consider resale value... The cabinets aren't painted currently - just wood, but not the loveliest cabinets ever
Suggestions for kitchen cabinets (color and style). ??? In the stages of designing the kitchen for our new home. It is a galley style kitchen. The dining area extends past the kitchen area and I don't want to put any type of bar for eating on the ends of the cabinets. I feel this will only close the area. Since the kitchen/eating and greatroom are an open floor plan, I will be using hardwood through this entire area. I am leaning toward the french cream with a glaze. It will be a small kitchen. So my cabinets will have to be designed to utilize space very efficiently. I will not be able have many upper wall cabinets, and I would like to use glass doors on a few doors to "dress-up" the look. If you can suggest a website to design a kitchen, that would be great. (not the hgtv one, it doesn't help me) Countertop colors??? I will probably use a granite.
kitchen design free softwares? i am renovating my kitchen i just want to know is there any free software available on net to design my own kitchen in 3d view with my choices of color schemes and cabinets . pls help me as soon as possible.
Which solid wood is considered more expensive for kitchen cabinets cherry or maple and which is warmer? Both woods being solid and in a lighter stain color with a glaze. Which would probably be more expensive to purchase and which would be considered a warmer look in the kitchen? Both of the same design in a more traditional raised panel.
Does anyone know where I can go and look at pictures of kitchen designs and colors? I have a kitchen that has white cabinets. Trying to decide whether to put black counter tops or shiny dark blue countertops.
Kitchen design? Hi- I'm a college grad student and am renting a townhouse. I am looking for ways to add fun color and decoration to my kitchen without spending too much money and no remodeling. I have cabinets with open space at the top so that has potential. Any ideas?
Who Made These Kitchen Cabinets? We are remodeling our kitchen and the new design would use roughly twice as many cabinets as we already have. Problem is, the existing cabinets, while nice, have proven impossible to identify. The dealers I have approached seem to be able to match the exact door design but not the finish or vise versa but I can not seem to be able to find the right dealer for this exact brand, whatever it is ... There are no markings in the drawers or anywhere else I can find to tell me who made them. Asides from visiting every one of the millions of cabinet dealers around, is there an easier way to identify what these cabinets that I have are? Added Details .. The cabinets are around 5 years old and were put in during a previous renovation for a previous owner. The contractor who did the work has vanished off the face of the earth.
Kitchen Cabinets - Painting? My kitchen cabinets are very solid and a nice looking design I think, but they are probably 20 years old. I don't know exactly what these are "painted" with, but it looks like it's some sort of baked on enamel or something. It definitely wasn't brush painted. Anyone have experience with these? what will I need to do to paint them as far as getting them prepped?
Please answer....... if your good at interior design (all opinions welcome)? My fiance and I just purchased a house and we will be moving in by the summer. We are now in the process of picking out colours for hardwood flooring, carpet (upstairs), kitchen cabinets, kitchen counter, ceramic tiles in the kitchen, front foyer, 3 bathrooms and the laundry room. He thinks that the dark hardwood will make the rooms seem smaller (they are not small rooms) and wants to go with lighter colours with everything. I like dark hardwood and lighter tile with light kitchen cabinets. Does that sound like it would look good? I was also thinking of a black granite kitchen counter for contrast. yes/no?
I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. Need to remodel...any ideas? Hi, I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. The previous owners have put granite floors, stone tiles for countertop, maple cabinets and white appliances. The ganite is black with brown spots like pattern - it is similar to the photos posted in the previous discussion named "Kitchens I have designed". The countertop is light brown with brown grout and the maple cabinets are the light colored kind. If you can imagine it - nothing goes together in the kitchen. I am not sure if I want to change the granite floors as that extends to the family room (open plan). Currently the walls are beige and I am planning on changing that to brown (not very dark but dark). What else should I change in the kitchen to make it look look beautiful? I am looking around in the forum and see very talented and creative people here - so, I am hoping to get some opinions about this. Please do let me know. I really appreciate it! Thank you!
Exploring Options for uising a General Contractor for a kitchen remodel? We are considering a kitchen remodel. We've hired a general contractor and a kitchen designer for the DESIGN PHASE (a seperate agreement will be presented for the BUILD PHASE). We would like to explore other paths in lieu of hiring a GC. We are interested in hearing from homeowners who have done kitchen remodels as to the options they pursued? How many served as their own GC's? How did that go? How many worked with the local home center for cabinets, floors, etc and left the structural stuff to someone else? How did that work? We're not interested in being our own GC, but there has got to be a less expensive way! We're making quality decisions and downgrading OUR choices for OUR kitchen just to pay the GC's fee and overhead costs. For example, we did all the work to select over $10K worth of appliances (which will be delivered and installed) and the GC will stand to earn quite a bit for what appears little work (enough for another appliance). Are there any other options?
Installing horizontal windows above kitchen cabinets? We're in the intial process of designing/updating our kitchen. In addition to new granite countertops, natural stone tile backsplashes and refacing cabinets, we're considering options to bring in more natural light. Vaulting the ceiling and installing skylights is one possible alternative, but a less expensive option may be installing horizontal windows above the existing kitchen cabinets. While we've seen this done in new homes to good effect, its been difficult to find examples of it done as a remodel option. Does anyone have experience with this or know if its a feasible option? For reference, there is 26" of vertical space between the top of the cabinet molding and the kitchen ceiling.

software.....? who knows any program that can help me design cabinets from kitchens...what i realy want is to take a picture with my digital camara and change colore patern and make a good design and also create my own kitchen... anything that is not photoshop...
NEW plumbing to install a kitchen? I am building a kitchen in what is currently an unfinished basement suite in my house. How important is the actual placement of the sink and dishwasher as they relate to the water supply lines and drains? The kitchen upstairs is on the same wall (west side of the house) but the kitchen downstairs will be about 20 feet to the left of the one upstairs. Is it easy to run the water lines over there? What do I need to keep in mind when planning my cupboards/sink location? Is there a vent somewhere that I need to work around? If I buy the cabinets and appliances and install everything, could any plumber hook up, re-route and create water supply and plumbing/drains to match where I put everything? The walls are already insulated and drywalled, but I can rip it off to deal with lines and drains if need be . The ceiling is finished with rectangular tile things, so access should be no problem that way either. What all do I need to consider before buying cabinets and planning design?
please hlep me to proofread the following sentences ....thanks ....? 5. Kitchen The kitchen style taps usually goes hand in hand with kitchen cabinets, sink or home appliances as a whole complete kitchen set. Therefore, we provide a wide range of design in kitchen taps to match market demands accordingly. Although there are different functions and features in kitchen taps including pull out, pull down, spout high and spout low. We believe outstanding product design would eventually catch consumers’ eyes and attentions. 6 Thermal Faucet We found out that the price level of thermal faucet and normal faucet are slightly different in retailer shops. However, in terms of scope of design style, there are limited selections in most of retailer channels, except showrooms. In the long term, the thermal faucets would be the main trend because the price is similar to non-thermal function. If so, we consider that the design will be consumer’s first priority. That is the reason we develop wide scale selections to meet customers’ demands. (asking customers what is the target market demand, thermal or non-thermal? if the price is close.) 7. Sliding Bar No matter in America, UK, Germany, the space of plastic shower program in retail stores is, the rotation rate and profit of sliding bars are quite high for retail stores themselves after our marketing research. Two years ago, manufacturers did design match with basin but didn’t bring too much bright effect. This year, we develop not only function-plus but also well-designed sliding bar as an adding value to stimulate customer’s purchasing desire.

I am designing my own kitchen and living room area from scratch.? Does anyone know of a good web site that will aid me in the layout and design process? I am having problems because doors are in wierd places, and I have a huge ugly brick fireplace that is going to have to be covered. Is home depot expo design consultant good? For a retainer fee of $750, Home Depot Expo will provide me a designer who would work with me on finding items for my home and color blending. When I use their service (installation and products sold in home depot) that equals 5k or more, my $750 will be refunded. Saleslady said the designers are not on commision so they are not going to make a profit on selling me any certain item. Also, installation fees are basically set. Doesn't this sound like a good deal? I need help with finding the right color blend for my living and dining room walls, hardwood floors , new cabinets for the kitchen and new window treatment. Sales lady said they can help me co-ordinate colors and someone would come over to my house for 2 hours next week. What do you think?
what is the best kind of backsplash to put in a kitchen? what color and design for the backsplash would go with an apple themed kitchen? the wall color will be a light yellow. countertops is a corion material. color not determined yet. flooring will be duraceramic...color not determined yet. also, cabinets will be mission style.
How do I find a kitchen designer for a small job? I can afford to re-do my (12') kitchen island right now, and I'm not getting much attention from Lowe's or Home Depot; the designer hasn't called back. What are the other options? DIY is not practical, so I'm not going there. Who else can help me design this island? Where else, besides other Big Boxes, can I go for design and product? I'm looking at upper-end stock cabinets to semi-custom. Thanks for your time and help! ~Kimber in Dallas, TX
where is a web page of photos of interior designer kitchens? I am building a new house and have to make some design choices as far as kitchen floors, counters, backsplash, cabinets, etc. I'd like to see several designed kitchens and see what I like and what I dont before I ruin my new house
What color goes well with maroon (for a paint job)? Our kitchen cabinet is going to be painted (at last). But we can't decide what color to paint it with. Actually the color of the kitchen tiles is maroon (kind of dark maroon). So what color goes well with that? We really want it to come out well. We can't afford to change it if we didn't like it. And the house would most probably be "passed on" so ^^, you get what i mean. Please and thank you! P.S: The cabinet is made out of wood with not much design on it. And the kitchen is simple yet elegant (as our neighbors who see it comment on it.)
What are the deisgn elements of a kitchen in a shingle style house? Like what color cabinets, the type of countertop, etc. design elements, not layout elements "shingle style" is actually a style of house built in the early 1900's in between the late 1800's Victorian and the 1920's Arts and Crafts. it's an early 1900's house...nothing but a 6 foot farm sink left of the original kitchen. So we are starting from scratch. Want to stay true to the house's history but obviously want a nice modern kitchen. Will be keeping the farm sink.
