Kitchen Design/Remodeling - Tiling Kitchen Backsplash Ideas? I too have formica laminate on the wall and want to replace it with tile. Since my new countertops are not as thick as the old ones, and there was a metal strip between old countertop and wall laminate, there is now a gap of drywall of approximately 1 inch between the granite countertop and the bottom of the wall laminate. Can I fill this in with something to make the backing surface even, and if so, what can I use? There are several places within this gap where they drywall is damaged from countertop removal, but I believe these areas could be spackled. Unfortunately before discovering this site, I took advice on an associate at a major home improvement center (Kitchen backsplash Ideas expert), who told me I could not tile over the laminate but that the laminate would pull off easily from the wall. I attempted to pull one piece off and most of the covering on the drywall came off with it. I don't suppose there is any repair for this other than replacing the drywall? The total size of the area I attempted to pull off is 24 x 36 and about 1/2 of that area still has laminate, which will not come off and the other half has naked dry wall. Luckily for me, this area is separate from my main kitchen area, where the laminate remains intact.

Kitchen Design/Remodeling - Kitchen backsplash ideas? Hi, we are having our kitchen remodeded and I want a backsplash on the wall behind the cooktop. The area is about 84x18 in. Our contractor insists that if I want the wall tiles there, I must have them on all the other wall spaces in the kitchen where there is no cabintery. That will not only be too expensive, but also I dont want that much color in the kitchen(I ve chosen a bright wall tile). Please tell me if I am doing something totally wrong by getting the wall tiles only behind the cooktop

Is there a way to remove a decal design on ceramic tile backsplash in kitchen? My kitchen has a glossy white ceramic backsplash. Random tiles have a fruit motif scattered around the backsplash-design appears to be some sort of decal that was applied on top of the tile. I would like to update the kitchen and get rid of these fruit motifs. I have tried Goof-Off, soap, Comet and they do not budge. Does anyone have any other ideas without damaging the tiles--I would like to just have the plain white tiles as I do not want to tear out the tile. Thanks for your suggestions!

Is it OK to have white & oak baseboards in the house? How do you make a smooth transition in an open design? Our foyer, hallway, & dining room have oak baseboards and oak trim around the doors and the door frames. The problem is the house is an open design so the hallway goes into the kitchen and family room, sharing one of the walls. The baseboards and trim in the kitchen and family room are white. I want to keep the white baseboards in those rooms but I like the oak in the other rooms. Would white baseboards look OK butting up against oak door frames? If not, is there a way to make a smoother color transition on the shared hallway wall where oak goes into the kichen corner where the trim is white? If I paint the trim around the door, would it look OK to leave just the door frames/jamb oak? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. I'm going to be putting in a new floor and when I put baseboards back up I want to do it right the first time.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to decorate a window without using curtains? I want something unique.? I live in a 100+ year old house and have been trying to decorate and design "outside of the box" and not rely on past favorites like Pier One and Target. I really like bohemian/gypsy type motifs. I want to do something with the windows in my kitchen and bathroom. I don't want to just buy curtains and put them up. I would sew my own if I knew how. I know the type of material I want to use, but am completely clueless on how to transfer the fabric from a square of material to a window treatment of some sort. I hope someone understands my question and gives me a new idea. The fabric I am going with is sheer and shiny. The windows are all small enough to only need one panel of traditional/valance curtains. Correction: I mentioned curtains to give indication of size of my windows.

Kitchen paint color scheme - interior decorating/design question HELP!? Help! My kitchen needs a makeover! Here's what has to stay - the floor has a marbled look to it - it is mostly white but has blueish gray in it, the cabinets are a beautiful dark wood to match the rest of the trim in our home, and the countertop is pale blue. The kitchen is quite small, and sort of dark because of all of the dark wood cabinets, but I am not willing to paint the cabinets. I consider myself to be good at interior design, but I am just stumped because of the high contrast between the pale blue countertop and the dark cabinets. I love the floor, but hate the countertop. I know you can buy paint to paint the counter, but I am too scared to do that. I would consider having someone put new laminate on the countertop, but I have no idea how much this would cost or who (a store?) you would go to to ask about this. Another problem I have is that there is a LOT of trim in our kitchen. This means I have to decide on two colors instead of one. Currently the kitchen is the same as it was when we moved in last year - I've done the rest of the house but am stumped on the kitchen. Right now the walls are sort of a pale greenish blue and the trim is sort of a light evergreen, and there is flowerish border around to tie all the blues/greens/beiges together. It certainly doesn't look bad, but its just kind of "blah" and doesn't do anything for me. It doesn't reflect my style or the fact that I'm 24 and really into interior design. I'm also scared to pair the blue with yellow because of it looking too country-ish. Please help! One more thing - my living room is off the kitchen, but through a doorway, and it is done in monochromatic shades of the aquaish color that's so hot right now - if anyone is familiar with Pier 1, its the color that they have a lot of pieces and curtains in. If I stick with blue or green in the kitchen, won't this clash with the aqua in the livingroom? Many are suggesting painting an accent wall another color - my kitchen is sort of circular with cabinets all around - there is no ceiling to floor wall in the whole kitchen without cabinets or the bar against it.

Interior Design Issue - Awkward Space - HELP!? Try to picture these dimensions, and please give me ideas...My living room and family room connect (with an archway inbetween) and the rooms are both incredibly narrow and small. The family room connects with the kitchen/breakfast area which is hardwood flooring, and the LR/DR is all carpeting. There is little wall space due to windows and a fireplace....I can't seem to do anything with these spaces - no matter how I arrange furniture, I can't get a comfortable seating area with a TV in either room without it looking strange. I'm at the point where almost everything is removed from both rooms and I'm staring at empty space. Kitchen design-help? I am remodeling my kitchen. What happens is that the kitchen and dining room are an only lineal piece and I don't have any the original floor tiles. I need to change the kitchen tile but I would like an idea on how to make it look good, like separate from the other room. I was thinking in borders or diamond. The previous owners have put granite floors, stone tiles for countertop, maple cabinets and white appliances. The ganite is black with brown spots like pattern - it is similar to the photos posted in the previous discussion named "Kitchens I have designed". The countertop is light brown with brown grout and the maple cabinets are the light colored kind. If you can imagine it - nothing goes together in the kitchen. I am not sure if I want to change the granite floors as that extends to the family room (open plan). Currently the walls are beige and I am planning on changing that to brown (not very dark but dark). What else should I change in the kitchen to make it look look beautiful? Interior design ideas? Working with modern furniture in small condo!? I'm moving into a new condo. Long story short, it's owned by my boyfriend's uncle.... so he's giving me all of the furniture that's in there. It's a very small one-bedroom. I wish I had a picture, but I don't. It's got white walls, white carpet, white ceilings, and black furniture. Black leather sofa, black tv stand, black dining room chairs, black stools, black oriental-inspired dresser, and a black bedframe with a semi-circle headboard. The coffee table is a rectangular piece of glass over a really awesome panther-sculpture. The panther's shoulders and hips hold up the table. The only splash of color is the cabinets in the kitchen that have been painted a bright turquoise. The condo is much more modern than my tastes, but I'm willing to work with it. The only problem is.... I'm not completely satisfied with the way it looks just yet. I hate having so much white and black in a small space. I like the contrast, but it's too overwhelming. Another issue is my furniture I'm bringing with me is mostly earth colors like brown and beige. Any ideas how I could make this work? Suggestions for painting the wall another color? Or possibly the cabinets? I'm fine with turquoise but if there's another color that works better I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks!

The cabinets in question are 13 years old, a tad plain, and on the cheap side, but they're really not bad. I just have a design idea that includes painting them, however, as this is my starter home and I don't plan on living here for likely more than a few years, I want to consider resale value... New Kitchen - Design query. wood units on wood floor? dilema.? We are currently choosing a kitchen to be installed in our 80's semi. Our initial idea was to have an oak laminate floor put on the entire ground floor (lounge/hall/kitchen/dining area) to create unity between all the rooms and keep dusty down etc. Glass doors to nable light to travel through (dark house). Now we are attempting to choose a kiting suite and ae stuck ! Would wooden faced doors look odd aginst a wooden floor? concernerned it way look to woody - like a sauna? Merge / clash? Should we go for painted wood type or plain doors to complement /contrast with the flooring? Or shoudl we not laminate the entire downstairs and have traditional black / cream tiles on kitchen floor to enable wood units to be fitted? Thus breaking up the "untiy / flow" of having the whole floor the same? We are trying to consider resale potential of the house (in the future) and trying to make it as light and large feeling as possible along with us having to like it obviously. Many Thanks

Creative Ways to Decorate 676 sq. ft apartment? SMALL KITCHEN Problem.? I am moving from a small (535 sq. ft) to a seemingly much much bigger 676 sq. ft. apartment this month. Design Question - Brown Throw Rug on Off-White Berber Carpet? Hi there, I bought a v modern condo, most everything is off-white (carpet, paint) with black kitchen applicances. Found a dark brown wool rug on sale at Pier One for dirt cheap so I lugged it home. i like earth tone colors but wonder if y'all think that a solid throw rug on white carpet is too strong contrast. i only have two soft lime green bucket chairs, a subdued red japanese trunk with a gold monkey on it as a small side table, and an oversized black chair w/ottoman that serves as couch - this has very small light brown, off-white polka dots on it. they're all hand-me downs and i'm making do. i really like the shag throw rugs with speckles of colors but can't afford that now. any design ideas for around this rug on a budget? or save the budget, return it quick... thanks!

We are building separate kitchen for baby, need tips!? We have decided to build an additional kitchen that will just be used to prepare baby formula (if for ANY reason our babies ever have to be formula fed, we realize it can happen) homemade baby foods, and snacks as they get older. This is a personal choice we have made and I am not looking for rants about cost or anything, we are doing just fine in that department. :) It will not be large, more like a large pantry size. Any tips on what should be added? Any design ideas? Have fun with it! :) It is a personal choice. I asked for ideas. Why must people Rant? It does not concern you why, just thought some might have fun coming up with ideas to help me design it. Thanks anyways. Baby bugs: lol. It really is not going to be a spectacular thing, trust me. Like I said, more of large pantry size. The cost is very low actually. It will contain a sink, cabinets, single range, flat surface stove, fridge(small), and everything will be stainless steel. It is just what we want to do and it is closer to our nursery and the kids play room/snack room. :)

Would you be interested in having a working, hand operated, antique style pump on your kitchen counter sink? A few years ago we built a new and larger kitchen on to our house. Being a ranch style home in the country we decided on an old style country kitchen design with a porclein sink in the counter and when deciding on what sink and faucet combination for the island we came up with the idea of a working pump and brass sink. I engineered a tank and keep fill system that sits under the counter and holds five gallons of filtered water from our existing well water supply. It works great and everyone who sees it seems to like it. I have been considering assembling kits for the do-it-yourselfer's or contractors and offering them for sale but don't know if there is a market for such an idea. Having been a frequent viewer here I thought this may be a good place to test the idea out. What do you think?

what is the height of wall units from the worktop? I am trying to design my kitchen but have no idea at what distance i leave between the worktop and the wall units. Since i dont have any tall units, I have nothing to gauge what the standard height should be
