Kitchen Design/Remodeling - Tiling Kitchen Backsplash Ideas? I too have formica laminate on the wall and want to replace it with tile. Since my new countertops are not as thick as the old ones, and there was a metal strip between old countertop and wall laminate, there is now a gap of drywall of approximately 1 inch between the granite countertop and the bottom of the wall laminate. Can I fill this in with something to make the backing surface even, and if so, what can I use? There are several places within this gap where they drywall is damaged from countertop removal, but I believe these areas could be spackled. Unfortunately before discovering this site, I took advice on an associate at a major home improvement center (Kitchen backsplash Ideas expert), who told me I could not tile over the laminate but that the laminate would pull off easily from the wall. I attempted to pull one piece off and most of the covering on the drywall came off with it. I don't suppose there is any repair for this other than replacing the drywall? The total size of the area I attempted to pull off is 24 x 36 and about 1/2 of that area still has laminate, which will not come off and the other half has naked dry wall. Luckily for me, this area is separate from my main kitchen area, where the laminate remains intact.

Is there a way to remove a decal design on ceramic tile backsplash in kitchen? My kitchen has a glossy white ceramic backsplash. Random tiles have a fruit motif scattered around the backsplash-design appears to be some sort of decal that was applied on top of the tile. I would like to update the kitchen and get rid of these fruit motifs. I have tried Goof-Off, soap, Comet and they do not budge. Does anyone have any other ideas without damaging the tiles--I would like to just have the plain white tiles as I do not want to tear out the tile. Thanks for your suggestions!
Kitchen Design/Remodeling - Kitchen backsplash ideas? Hi, we are having our kitchen remodeded and I want a backsplash on the wall behind the cooktop. The area is about 84x18 in. Our contractor insists that if I want the wall tiles there, I must have them on all the other wall spaces in the kitchen where there is no cabintery. That will not only be too expensive, but also I dont want that much color in the kitchen(I ve chosen a bright wall tile). Please tell me if I am doing something totally wrong by getting the wall tiles only behind the cooktop
Kitchen design-help? I am remodeling my kitchen. What happens is that the kitchen and dining room are an only lineal piece and I don't have any the original floor tiles. I need to change the kitchen tile but I would like an idea on how to make it look good, like separate from the other room. I was thinking in borders or diamond. I'm not sure on what to do or the colors. The other tiles are terracota and the kitchen cabinets are mahogany. If I could see a picture maybe on the web of one idea!!
Tile Ideas (Read More!)? I've started painting 4" ceramic tiles and selling them in sets of four on ebay. Here are some examples of ones I did already: My first was four brightly colored rainforest frogs with different patterned backgrounds. Then, I took some pale pink tiles and painted the silhouettes of ballet dancers on each in black. Very Cute! I also did a kitchen tile set with a teabag, a kettle, and two teacups with floral designs. Then I did a mural of a yellow bird on a branch...can't really eplain it. Give me some more ideas!!! What would you want in your kitchen or bathroom? ATTENTION EVERYONE!!! ...I also just started a set of cupcake tiles:o)

What Backsplash design and Tile? Here is a picture of my kitchen. http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/1885/kitchen1ep1.jpg It is a very small kitchen....but it's cozy. I just replaced all of my 1960's, rotted cabinets with the ones in the picture. I am a single guy so I am not very good at picking out colors that will go well so I need your help in deciding a backsplash idea. I was thinking white glossy tiles with a counter top matching pattern every so often. Please keep in mind that I WILL be painting this room and I am open for color suggestions. I am also going to put 12" ceramic tile down on the floor. I was thinking of a dark tan/Brown color. Any help would be GREAT! All ideas are welcome even if you do not like mine. I can install everything but coming up with something that matches is SO HARD! Go Figure.... Another picture from the opposite side...... http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/90/kitchen3bs4.jpg
Tiles for the kitchen and bathroom? I want to change the kitchen floor, and I was wondering what is the less costly yet best looking idea for the floor: I just moved and it now looks like it has a one-sheet fake vinyl covering, but I want to change it for tile-looking design. Also, would you use the same idea for the bathroom? This one looks to be tiles, but not not ceramic.
I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. Need to remodel...any ideas? Hi, I just bought a new home - love the floor plan but not the kitchen. The previous owners have put granite floors, stone tiles for countertop, maple cabinets and white appliances. The ganite is black with brown spots like pattern - it is similar to the photos posted in the previous discussion named "Kitchens I have designed". The countertop is light brown with brown grout and the maple cabinets are the light colored kind. If you can imagine it - nothing goes together in the kitchen. I am not sure if I want to change the granite floors as that extends to the family room (open plan). Currently the walls are beige and I am planning on changing that to brown (not very dark but dark). What else should I change in the kitchen to make it look look beautiful? I am looking around in the forum and see very talented and creative people here - so, I am hoping to get some opinions about this. Please do let me know. I really appreciate it! Thank you!
New Kitchen - Design query. wood units on wood floor? dilema.? We are currently choosing a kitchen to be installed in our 80's semi. Our initial idea was to have an oak laminate floor put on the entire ground floor (lounge/hall/kitchen/dining area) to create unity between all the rooms and keep dusty down etc. Glass doors to nable light to travel through (dark house). Now we are attempting to choose a kiting suite and ae stuck ! Would wooden faced doors look odd aginst a wooden floor? concernerned it way look to woody - like a sauna? Merge / clash? Should we go for painted wood type or plain doors to complement /contrast with the flooring? Or shoudl we not laminate the entire downstairs and have traditional black / cream tiles on kitchen floor to enable wood units to be fitted? Thus breaking up the "untiy / flow" of having the whole floor the same? We are trying to consider resale potential of the house (in the future) and trying to make it as light and large feeling as possible along with us having to like it obviously. Many Thanks
Kitchen floor fitted wrongly? We have just had our kitchen floor relaid using vinyl tiles interspersed with design strips. It seemed like a nice idea at the time. The design strips are meant to mimic grouting. Should they be laid flush with the tile surface? Ours almost all protrude above the tile. Have they been fitted incorrectly?
Have any Interior Design resources re: 50s era, retro, etc.? I'm purchasing a house that was built in the 50s. It had one owner and is all orginial. Slate roof, brick exterior. The kitchen has pink metal cabs and orginial Chambers range and oven. The bathrooms have the original colorful 50s tile. I'd like to update the windows, lighting, appliances, etc. yet maintain the 50s vibe. Any resources or ideas would be appreciated.

What decorating scheme should I use? My fiance and I are moving into a really classy apartment. It's a one bedroom, one bath with beige walls and beige carpet. It also has beige tiles stretching from the kitchen to the dining area. I want to bring some color to it but stay classy and classic (he hates modern design). I need some ideas for color schemes we have no furniture yet so anything goes.

How much will a remodel help my homes value.? My home is in Menasha WI. When I bought it 2 months ago It was appraised at $125,000. I recently did a complete remodel of the downstairs bathroom as well as the kitchen. The old bathroom was very old and nasty and had a cinder block shower. Now it has a nice, large, tile, two person shower and a large two mirror vanity. The kitchen had a linoleum floor and the design was poorly layed out. I opened it up with a nicer design, all new Appliances, a island, and a tile floor. Basically a top to bottom remodel of both the bathroom and kitchen. Does any appraiser on here or someone who really knows what they are doing give me an vague idea of what I will have gained from doing this? P.S. all the labor was done by me and most of the cabinets and fixtures were bought through my work, so I was able to get our "cost" on them. I have roughly $5,000 into the bathroom and $6,500 into the kitchen. Thanks!
