Direction of Hardwood Floors?
I am building a new house and having Hardwoods throuout the whole house. But they go 2 different directions. If you walk in my front door they go longways from the front to the back of the house (this being the foyer). But this leads into the living room which runs from side to side. Also my dining room runs from front to back and this leads into the kitchen which runs side to side. Is this normal, I have looked at other pictures and all the rooms seem to go the same direction. Thanks Also no designs, just normal hardwoods.

- It's not the norm, but it's not unheard of either. If it looks good to you, then it's fine.
- Generally they run parallel to the longest dimension of a room, or in a way that they run "vertically" from the primary vantage point. As an example, from my dad's foyer you look into the den to the left, the family room to the center, and the dining room to the right. The grain runs away from the foyer in all 3 rooms, meaning the den and dining room are parallel. The foyer is the primary vantage point. Changing directions is not at all unusual. Hope this helps.
- In the days when hardwood floors meant full thickness hardwood "floorboards" that contributed to structural strength. The boards were run perpendicular to the floor joists even if there was an underlayment Modern "hardwood" flooring is more decorative than anything & with a substantial underlayment, direction is not that important. A the contractor should be able to tell you why it was done. Best regards
