Painting wood kitchen cabinets - good idea, or bad?
Thinking of resale value, would it matter much if I were to paint my wood kitchen cabinets? The cabinets in question are 13 years old, a tad plain, and on the cheap side, but they're really not bad. I just have a design idea that includes painting them, however, as this is my starter home and I don't plan on living here for likely more than a few years, I want to consider resale value... The cabinets aren't painted currently - just wood, but not the loveliest cabinets ever

- As long as it's properly done, looks nice and not sloppy there should only be a positive affect on your resale value.
- I don't care for painted wood, I love to see the wood grain show. sand or strip them down to bare wood and see what is under there. When sanding go with the wood grain. Then select a stain that you like. You can always add molding or any other kind of decoration that you had in mind.
- I would leave the cabinets alone...this way the buyer would have the option of having the natural look, paint them or replace them and you saved yourself the time , work and expense.
- i personally wouldn't worry about resale value that much. if you are planning on living there even for a couple of years, do what you really enjoy and love. if it makes you happy, go for it. and you said the cabinets weren't in the best shape anyways. who knows? maybe the next owners won't even like the cabinets and rip them out anyways.. do what makes you happy...=)
- 12 years ago when we were getting ready to sell our home, we painted our kitchen cabinets. They were originally oak with a stain and varnish. We primed and painted them a soft satin white. Not only did they greatly brighten up the kitchen, they made it look bigger and we had no complaints when we sold the house. If you look at a lot of kitchens on TV and the cooking shows, they are mostly painted.
- Good idea to paint them? Yes Good for resale ? Yes
