Does anyone have any ideas on how to decorate a window without using curtains? I want something unique.?

I live in a 100+ year old house and have been trying to decorate and design "outside of the box" and not rely on past favorites like Pier One and Target. I really like bohemian/gypsy type motifs. I want to do something with the windows in my kitchen and bathroom. I don't want to just buy curtains and put them up. I would sew my own if I knew how. I know the type of material I want to use, but am completely clueless on how to transfer the fabric from a square of material to a window treatment of some sort. I hope someone understands my question and gives me a new idea. The fabric I am going with is sheer and shiny. The windows are all small enough to only need one panel of traditional/valance curtains. Correction: I mentioned curtains to give indication of size of my windows.

  1. you said you didn't want to use curtains but a valance is a type of curtain. plants make a good window covering.if placed right.
  2. Venetian blinds or wooden shutters
  3. I've always have wanted to do this: Go to flea markets and antique shops and collect bottles of different colors. Then go to a glass shop and have glass shelves cut to fit across the windows. Then nail wood strips to the window frame to support the shelves, after figuring out what size bottles go on each level. I'd put the biggest bottles on the sill, and go smaller each level up. I can't decide if I'd like a single color in each window or mix them up. This is probably not a good idea is you have kids or cats. But if you do and they're not too rambunctious, you could affix the bottles to the shelves with rubber cement.
  4. go to a store that sell used building material and look for old shutters the rougher the better knock off the loose paint and lightly sand take what ever color of paint that goes or contrasts your color scheme cut with water 3 to 1 to make a wash apply let dry and clear coat hand with distressed hinges
  5. Find an old stained glass design , frame it and suspend it in front of the window http://www.AliciaTappDesigns.com Any image on tiles
  6. how about some roman shades made with the fabric? or you can use a small tension rod and hang it so that it is inside the window. this way the trim work around the window shows nicely. I also say some cool window clings that provide privacy and are pretty neat to look at. http://www.fabfauxfilm.com/PrivacyFrostedFilms1.html
