Kitchen Decor?

I just remodeled my kitchen and now have to re-decroate. I now have a 1foot space or so from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling. My kitchen USED to have all vegetables and antiques. My kitchen now has blue, beige, cream, brown flooring (vinyl - looks like tile) with oak cabinets, brown, cream swirl mixed countertops that is called sandstone, beige wall tile with a off white pain for trim and a very light brown almost beige paint for the walls. The light above the sink is now a tiffany stained glass with greens, browns and beige. The regular light is the exact same as the other light just bigger. I rather not cram the top of my cabinets with tons of items to keep it simple and clean but what can I put up there that is just a couple things that looks nice to accent the kitchen and fill the empty space?

  2. YOu could put some of your larger appliences and decorative bowles that you don't use that often, or as the other person said, baskets put a homey touch, my mother used to sell longaberger (don't think i said that right) and she decorated with those and gets TONS of complements, just a pain to keep them dusted!
  3. In my kitchen I used that space for storage. I attached a grape vine garland around the top of the cabinet and then place small matching decorative baskets in the space. With your countertops any thing too rustic can look old and dirty so maybe pretty hatboxes or bins would work.
  4. I would get or use decorative kitchen items. I have an old fashion coffee grinder which also is very decorative. Make sure all things are easy to clean as they get very greasy and dusty sitting up there. Baskets are great but do need to get a hot shower from time to time ;) I love decorative serving balls and dishes. If they can serve as storage as well that is even better. Framed art would also be nice. Just make sure everything is washable. Congrats on your new kitchen.
  5. I have been a Kitchen Designer for over 5 years, and in my mind, the BEST thing you can do for such a kitchen is to install either lighting, or big molding to close the whole gap! Of the two, lighting will be WAY cheaper and will provide a nice touch. The lights should be placed on top of the cabinets facing up towards the ceiling, and they should be on a separate switch, preferably a dimmer switch. This will create a great atmosphere for dinner parties, as well as give you a soft light that won't pop your eyeballs when you go to the kitchen in the middle of the night for that late-night snack or drink of water, so that you will be able to relax in the warm glow while there and then go back to bed without having "sunlight syndrome", if you know what I mean!!! ;) If money is not really an object, have multi-layer molding installed to close the gap. You could also combine the two together ie., a small layer of molding that hides the lights behind it and accentuates it!!! The molding should, ideally, be a complementary color, but either darker or lighter with an insert or two that match the cabinet color, so that attention is drawn to it, but it does not look like an after-thought. Make sure you consult a VERY good designer if you decide to go this route! (Jeez, I wish I could design it 4 you!!!) Good Luck!!!

  7. Look at thrift stores for beautiful glass bottles in brown and blues. They will reflect light and add interest.
