What are some traditional themes for kitchen decor?
I want something nice and not tacky. I'm not into animals or the frutis (apples, watermelons).. I had picked out a wine theme but my religious family members would not shut up about how wrong I was. Any ideas? I'm no interior decorator, so I need something that will be easy to find and correlate together. Thanks in advance!

- We have the fat chef theme which is really cute. Lots of stuff on ebay to buy 4 that theme.
- I think the little fat italian cook is too cute.
- my kitchen is country blue and cream with bits of red accents,,one wall is papered in the tiny blue and cream plaid. i have a very high shelf, like a plate shelf, that runs across that wall, with vines with berries and bird nests, bird houses, little cardinals scattered and hidden in the vines. (hobby lobby or michaels) my appliances are also cream colored. and since i dont have the time i'd like to cook, the wallflower freshner always has vanilla or spice scent in it. its very cozy.
- I remember my "traditional" kitchen having a grapevine theme. Close to your wine them, but not alcohol-related. We had a beautiful stenciling of a grapevine along the top-most part of the wall, and we made our own pottery with a similar look to it. Graphes are also fairly easy to paint. Green squiggles and leaf shapes with purple dots clustered together in a traingley shape. Another really awesome them is vegetables. I saw some awesome prints, by Greg Brown, that would look great in any kitchen, and are quite entertaining: http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Rescue-Posters_i308661_.htm And the colors tomato-red, off-white, tan and green look marvellous together. Although, I would probably speckle the green, or just use minimal ammounts of it, to avoid getting a christmassy look. Light, creamy yellows also look wonderful with vegetable colors. Best wishes!
- traditional is roosters, cows, sunflowers, fruit. I don't like any of them for my kitchen. My kitchen doesn't really have a theme, but it does have a touch of 'wine' to it & rest of kitchen is plain. I STARTED with plain & boring. White walls, oak cabinets, white ceramic tiles. butcherblock counter and a wall paper border of plum & green. Mint green lace curtain, dish cloth, hot pad holders, hand towel. Brown and yellow for counter appliance covers, canisters, etc... On top of wall cabinets, placed old to antique kitchen related things: Pottery bowls, paper & metal boxed spice containers, egg beaters, coffee pot, rolling pin, mason jars and vine bottles (antique ones is not promoting it, right?). Above these items, I had fake grape vines swooping up & down from ceiling towards these old items (hanging from a few coffee cup hooks) plus pieces of vines hanging on the old stuff. Perhaps you may find a 'bingo' in part of my story.
- Red checked wallpaper & trim looks good. The smaller gingham checks, 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Trim with vines & grapes or maybe Strawberries, their leaves & little white flowers. I lived in the Southwest for many years & love the look of Red Peppers so that is what I am using. But in the "Frozen North" (North Dakota) there is not a lot of choices, so I am putting Red Checked tablecloths & napkins with them. There are a few choices in fabric with the pepper motif, so I am using that too. Good luck & good hunting! Penny
- I have found that when you go with a popular theme of the day you will end up with a dated looking kitchen in a couple years. What I have done is think of something that you really like..colors..flowers or even something that you like to collect. I personally like pottery, chunky old pottery and old teapots. I have incorporated it into my kitchen decor with colors that I like. Maybe you like old bottles, frogs, crocks, old vases. Be original and people will be so impressed with your creativity!! You probably have what you need to decorate with right in your home, by adding a few touches of color ( with table linens and towels ) you can create your own look, and easily change the look with different color schemes. If you find something you like, scour flea markets and garage sales to add to your theme. Hope this helps
