Can you paint LAMINATE Kitchen Cabinets?? Can you add hardware too?
I want to paint our Laminate cabinets in our new house and possibly add hardware but I'm afraid the laminate might crack from the screws and the paint wont be as durable on suck a slick laminate surface. What can I do? I mean such not suck

- I dont know about the hardware but to paint laminate you just need to lightly sand and rough up the surface so that the paint will stick
- If it is real wood u can sand it and and some wax product, but it is not recomended to paint laminates. You can remove it (EASY) and use other type (color).
- I believe you *could* paint them but I really don't think it would stand up to water and splatters in the kitchen. I had laminate counter tops and I ripped out all the trim and tiled right over top of it. I bought rather cheap tiles from Lowes and added a nice center row of more pricey tiles. That was 4 years ago and they are standing up well. You can cut on them, put hot pots on it, etc. and it doesn't leave a mark. Good luck!
- I'd suggest lightly sanding the laminate 's surface to give the primer a "tooth" to bind to (deglossing might be easier tho) .Ask a pro at the paint store (they'd be more than glad to advise you ). Yes , you can add new hardware (do some planning on using the existing holes if you can't fill them because you decided that you can't paint the laminate or decided not to after all) .
- lightly sand the laminate and then paint it with 2 coats of paint and one coat of poly.pre drill your holes when adding hardware.the pre drilling will prevent any cracking.be sure to pre drill with a wood drill bit and not a masonary drill bit.
- 2 things... as everyone has mentioned.. LIGHTLY sand it. OR Kilz it b/4 painting them. Use the ORGINAL Kilz.. it's oil base so u have to clean w/ paint cleaner if u want to save ur' rollers/brushes or even get paint on anywhere, but it covers very nicely esp dark colors. & I'm sure u can put handles on it. U will need a drill bit but ask the hardware person for the rt one.
