Spray painting cabinet handles and hinges...?

Our existing kitchen cabinet hardware is dark-worn-brass which no longer goes with the other updates we've made. We like the look (style/shape) of them, but would like to re-color them to a stainless steel color. We've cleaned them up and attempted several different spray paint colors that offer a metalic grey, but haven't quite reached the color that we want. Mostly they are turning out too bright, or too metalic. Or both. Has anyone tried to achieve a stainless steel color this way. Any tips? Know of any suppliers of specialty spray paints beyond the usual Home Depot / Lowe's selection?

  1. sorry but to get a stainless look...you will ahve to buy new hardware...and you shoudl NEVER paint hinges anyway
  2. I would suggest taking the old cabinet hardware to someone who does chrome refinishing on old automobile parts... like bumpers and trim, etc. They have the means to take older metalic objects and refinish them with professional results.
  3. try putting one coat on of a matte black spray paint let that dry properly . then use the metallic grey on it. or...i know one person who has used Krylon Metallic Leafing and Smoke Gray mixed together, and painted it with a very good brush and got a pretty good result with that Just make sure to properly degrease, and prime the surface before painting to guarantee adhesion. hope this helps
  4. You need to achieve the antique effect over the metalic silver, you can do this by using one of the water based craft paints in black, paint it on and wipe it off, let dry and spray with a product called crystal glaze, this will put a shiney finish on it and it holds up well.
