How durable is paint on metal?
We are redoing our kitchen and looking to replace all the hardware on the cabinets, but it is quite costly! I am painting the hinges with Rustoleum and was wondering if panting the handles would be a good idea, or if the paint would just chip off.

- Well I would sand the metal with a bit of fine grit sandpaper before applying any paint. It is easier for the paint to adhere and stay that way if the surface is more coarse. Also there are paints that are more resilient. I know that it is likely to chip over time, but if you exhaust all methods to prevent it then it might not happen for a long time.
- You can purchase a paint that is heat resistant. I painted my metal heaters in my home with this stuff, and if will hold up to heat of 100 degrees, it shouldn't chip off a cupboard handle. .
- ALWAYS sand first to make sure thepaint will adhere. ENAMEL paints work best. They are wayyyyy durable, too! But it should be fine (Rustoleum) on the handles, (its made for that) but remember it takes paint upto 2 weeks to fully "cure", so I would just treat them as "delicate" till then.
- I believe that the paint would just chip off unless the paint is specifically for metal. Check out the website. Good luck!!
- paint does not stick on metal. What you would need to do is give the hinges an electric charge so the are magnetized, put on talcom powder so it sticks to the metal and then paint it. That is how they paint Ferraris and I'm sure that would be nice to have in the kitchen too.
- The durability of paint on anything depends on the surface preparation. Metal needs a primer or heated paint. Think of your car, does it come off quickly? Probably not - because of the primer. Maybe soak the handles in acid overnight to scratch off the outer coat of whatever is on there. Coca Cola works well for doing that. Then you should put a coat of primer and then your paint. Happy remodeling!
- some interesting ideas, they make paint and primer specifically for metal. rough up the surface, also, make sure all the grit and grime from daily handleing is cleaned off very well, try the coca cola thing for that. or rubbing alcohol, or mineral spirits. you would need to let the primer dry, more than likely an oil based primer, for about 24 hours, then use the metal paint. the rustoleum should work fine.
