Can you paint hinges for a kitchen cabinet? If so what is the process? Sanding, priming, etc?

  1. yes you can i have done several times. it works better if you use spray paint. go ahead. have fun if you don't like it then you can sand them off easily.
  2. Personally I wouldn't..I am a 37 year experiendced painter and I just don't like the outcome..You can make the paint stick no problem using a good solvent based primer first..but the problem is when you open the doors after they dry the first time..You will see cracks of paint in all of the parts that move or seperate for one another..these will be jagged looking...So this is your call..but as I say, You can make the paint stick, but keeping it looking nice is another item
  3. I just painted my cabinets & wanted new hardware, but couldn't afford to change the handles & hinges so they matched. I painted the handles & hinges instead for a fresh look. All I used was oil based gloss black (like rustoleum). I painted 1 side at a time, after it was dry I turned it over & did the other side. I didn't need a primer, it only took 1 coat & oil base is very tough after it dries. I use my cabinets alot & the paint hasn't peeled or cracked. They still look new. It can be time consuming, but it's worth it. If you go this route, don't forget to paint all the screw heads too.
  4. When I painted my hinges, I was going for more of a Shabby Chic look. So, I didn't prime them. I dry brushed them (barely dip your paint brush in the paint and then wipe off on a paper plate, then paint the hinge with light strokes). I did my entire set of kitchen cabinets this way,but it's too much to write about here. You can visit my blog for more information http://www.uglykitchencabinets.blogspot.com
