Buying our first house, have no furniture - bad credit - should we rent to own furniture?
I've just moved to the US with my husband and we're about to purchase our first home in Missouri, right now we're living in a hotel and have no furniture as we sold everything and just moved with basically our suitcases. We have absolutely no furniture (excpet kitchen items... plates and a few appliances) My husbands credit is bad due to a nasty ex wife and I have no credit because i'm a new resident. Should we look at rent to own furniture? or is there an easier way to furnish our home without credit?

- No - horrible rip off. Just save and buy pieces as you can afford them. Buy inexpensive "starter" furniture untli you can afford to upgrade. Of course, I don't know how you plan to BUY A HOUSE without credit?!?!!?
- If you do the rent to own deal, you will end up spending way, way more than it is worth. Try to by some second hand stuff and then save and buy nicer stuff as you can afford it.
- Go to www.freecycle.org and look for a link for that organization in the town you are moving to. The point of that website is to get rid or things you don't need, for FREE, and to take things and ask for what you do need. Put a post on there for the items you are looking for, and I am certain you will get them. Sure they will be used, but they will be free and will get you by until you get some cash. The site is legit, I have used it before. Good luck with your new life.
- renting to own is a terrible terrible idea. yeah it looks cheap but you pay twice as much for the furniture and its really not worth it. if you cant afford to buy a bunch of furniture then you should try www.craigslist.com for the area in which you guys live. theres lots of good furniture on there and its how i furnished my entire apartment when i had it. theres plenty of chairs and couches in the free section and even the stuff for sale is relatively cheap. and if youre concerned about it being clean just steam clean the apoulstry and its like brand new.
- I wouldn't . I would look in the papers for used furniture or go to garage sales. It will be one less bill . When My friend got married all they bought was a few chairs, a cheap table and a bed. They got really nice things by looking in the paper.Gary Dominicus
- Renting to own is a bad way to go. Visit your local Thrift store and yard sales. Do not start off owing more than the furniture is worth by renting to own. After you close on your house the credit offers should start to arrive in the mail. Do not over extend yourselves. Buy only the bare essentials for now.
- first of all as a real estate professional, let me say you have made a good decision to purchase a home. Likewise, I would believe it would be an equally good decision to save the money and buy some furniture with cash. When I got my first home we had nothing but our clothes, blankets, & towels. It took almost a year, but we saved our money and bought one piece at a time. The best places to look for bargains are thrift stores, antique shops, and you can even purchase used furniture from those rental stores for really cheap. It doesn't have to be new, b/c with a little love or sandpaper and paint anything can be new. welcome to america!
- Buy used furniture. DO NOT rent to own. The final cost will be more than twice the new purchase price. A friend used to manage one of these stores and he spent half his time repossessing stuff. If it turns out you can't pay, they "track" your social security number, so you won't even be able to get phone or cable service hooked up. My friend got a great sectional couch for only $400 from the pennysaver. It was in like-new condition. Buy used furniture bit by bit until you have what you need.
- If you do the rental thing (heaven forbid) it will cost you up the wazoo. Probably 3-4 times what the actual cost of the furniture is. About a year of doing that and you'll really be kicking yourselves as its starting to fall apart or in need of repair. Cut the contract off early and really pay big time for it. If it were me I would start cruising some garage sales. You usually can find some nice stuff at a negiotiated price. Never Pay what they are asking. Whats really nice when you get your home furnished, you won't have to worry about making any weekly-monthly pain in the butt payments. Take the extra cash and put some in the bank and go have a nice dinner with your spouse.
