Colour advice for VERY dark kitchen?

Looks like I've been lumbered with coming up with ideas for mum's kitchen, this happens every year as soon as I get a break from uni she expects me to pretty much single-handidly design & paint a room :-S, I usually don't mind but the kitchen really has me stumped. Dad chose the most old fashioned style, darkest wood possible for the cupboards, I googled & found a similar style & colour http://www.duraoak.net/assets/images/Dales-Dallas-Kitchen02.jpg Changing the cupboards is not possibe so we have to brighten the room with the paint & accesories alone, aside from the dark wood, our kitchen is pretty much devoid of all light, the sun shines through every other window in the house but just avoids it, even though the kitchen is a good size the dullness makes it seem smaller. So any ideas on colour & light, from you lovely creative people on answers would be v. much appreciated.

  1. we have a very dark kitchen and its banana yellow, sounds disgusting but its really nice and brightens the place up so much,I'll always have a yellow kitchen now no matter if I have a brighter house with a brighter kitchen in future.

  3. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours: http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/ I think you can brighten up the walls with "divine white" (# 6105). As for lighting, you might add some under cabinet lighting and maybe a ceiling fixture that takes a lot of bulbs, such as: http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Aberdeen_Roman_Bronze_Ceiling_Fan_with_Light/840/ The ceiling fan fixture that I have in my kitchen takes four bulbs & it's very bright in there when it's on. You can also take a photo of your room & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website: http://www.roomvues.com/ You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
  4. i had a similar problem in my kitchen. i took one of the cabinets off of the wall, moved it to the wall right next to it, and added a window. i'm guessing the cabinets are brand new, so painting them wouldn't be an option? if you have a wall that's non load-bearing, you might consider taking it out or adding a bar. some options for paint would be to do a lime wash on the walls, (i've never done it but i saw it in a magazine and it looked gorgeous), and you'll want to use lots of light colors. i wouldn't recommend bright white--i'd do soft ivory...i'm all out of ideas--friday finds me counterproductive! good luck.
  5. Hmm to make the brown pop and make your kitchen BRIGHT, red and white would look really nice maybe a red table cloth, and some red appliances (toaster, blender) Silver also maybe think about getting different light bulbs that give of a nice soft bright light that will work wonders just with that. also fresh flowers (or fake) on your table I buy them every week, that can be a nice a pretty way of bringing more color to your kitchen!! Hope it brighten's up for you!! Peace v
