What are some good ways to remove painted over screws from kitchen cabinets?

We are re-doing our kitchen and want to replace the hinges. We can't get a bite on the painted over phillip-head screws to make them turn. Any ideas?

  1. the trick is to put the correct sized screwdriver, whether a slotted or phillips head, into each screw, then tap a few times with a hammer. This will generally remove enough paint for you to get a grip on them. Let them soak overnight in a container with some hot water and dish detergent, it wsill all scrape off easily the next morning.
  2. I have always been able to get them out using a method similar to what lorenzo stated. Start with a small flat bladed screwdriver and scrape as much paint out as you can. Then take a #2 Phillips screwdriver and try turning the screw out while tapping it with a hammer. Works almost every time. Sometimes I have had to go to a larger screwdriver.
  3. All the above
  4. Some jackass painted all the screws in my kitchen It was as if he tried to fill the holes with paint I used a soldering gun heat up the screw slots and a tooth pick to remove the paint from the screws heads worked well for me took me only a few mins If your screws are brass treat them like you wife cuss at them but don't hit them They both are nice to look at but brake easily and you never know when you need them again They both tarnish a little but clean up well You need the right size driver for both Hey I'm on a roll
