What is the best way to paint kitchen cabinets?
Is there a specific process to use? What about product recommendations?

- First wash them down with Trisodium Phosphate (TSP, found in most paint & hardware stores) and rinse with water. It will degrease them and lightly etch the surface for better bonding. Allow to dry. Then prime with Alkyd (oil-based) Primer, like Zinsser Cover-Stain or a latex primer like their 1-2-3 Primer. After that has dried for about 2 hours, you can paint them with either latex/water-based or oil-based paint. Alkyd / Oil-based paint will require paint thinner for clean-up, but it will cure to a harder finish and the doors and drawers won't stick shut so bad, nor will cans and glassware stick to the shelves. It also will level out better leaving less brush marks.

- Here's a good step by step. Just takes lots of patience and time, but worth it in the end. http://www.oldhouseweb.com/how-to-advice/painting-kitchen-cabinets.shtml
- Clean them. Prime them with an oil based Kilz or Zap. Your good to go with any latex semi gloss or enamel. Use the right brush if your using enamel or brush strokes will show. You can add minwax gel stain over the dry paint to add depth. The stain will settel in the reveals for a more weathered or antiqued look. Apply sparingly using a soft rag or t shirt pulling off the excess. Good luck
