Kitchen remodel -- black granite floor and black granite countertop?

I have a small kitchen that I want to remodel. I like the look of the black granite floor tiles and I also like the black granite counter tops. If I were to do both in the black granite, would this look bad? I have never seen it done so I thought maybe it was a design faux pas.

  1. A black floor is going to show everything. My mother had a black floor. It was stunning when it was clean, but it never was. She didn't have black counter tops - I think with light cabinets it could be really cool.
  2. Black will show every bit of dust you didn't even know you had! I have a black tiled kitchen island and I can dust it and 5 minutes later it looks like I didn't touch it at all. I am putting a table cloth on it. I would maybe go for something with gray in it and light cabinets.
  3. oh that sounds nice...but i'd go for lights coloured cabinets - maybe an ivory would be nice..but maybe a dark grey floor would be nice as black floors are a nightmare to keep clean!
  4. I recently had this dilemma with a client- its what she requested and as a designer i had to steer her in a different direction. We resolved it by using the black granite counter tops and a wood floor with a black granite floor in the adjacent hallway-it turned out beautiful .maybe something like this can work for you. another suggestion is to alternate black and alternate color to make a check floor-or to put in an alternate color to make a border pattern with the black-or even vise-versa
  5. Some people have spacial vision problems to where they will not be able to tell the difference between the countertop and the floor. That means that it is highly possible that you will continually knock things off your countertops because your mind it tricking you to think that the countertop extends where it does not. Also, granite floor can be very slippery in an area with a lot of water. 6. i would suggest a quality black slate for the floor. quality means not from the depot or lowes btw. too much shine as far as i'm concerned. the countertops will still stand out even though they're the same color.
