Why would I have dust moths in my kitchen cabinet area if I have a clean kitchen and no food out ?

We have bought this home and have a problem with small moths that are like dust moths , they are mostly in and around the cabinets in the kitchen which is very strange because we are clean people who pride ourselves on a clean kitchen area with no dirty dishes and no food left out anyone have any knowledge of this or advice? Thanks

  1. Sometimes clean has nothing to do with problems like this. I have observed roaches in the cleaniest kitchen I have ever been in. You might be seeing one of the stages of weevils. They are small winged creatures that seem to have no reason for being. Weevils can go right through plastic and cardboard packaging and set up house before you know what hit you. You can bring them in in your grocery's without knowing it. Check all your boxes of crackers and packages of pasta/rice. All it takes is one infested box somewhere in the house and you will see them.
  2. I think you have "pantry moths". Very common. They were probably there in egg or larva stage when you moved in and have progressed to adult stage moths. Check the inside of the cabinets for signs of moths. Move everything around and remove any moths/larva you can see check the outside of all the packaged dry goods (noodles, grains, cereals...) for signs of webbing or moths, toss anything infested and take it outside to the trash put the remaining dry goods inside sealed plastic bags and observe the bags for a few days. If nothing shows up...it's probably ok, but check everything before you prepare it for eating. I opened a package of cookie mix earlier today and found them inside the bag...none flitting around the house There's a product called "Pantry Pest" that you can buy at some grocers and convenience stores. It contains 2 tent like paper structures with sticky stuff on the inside and a small sealed packet with a moth attractor. These work really well...but have to be replaced periodically to remove the infestation.
